Orvieto what to see and do

Medieval Quarter
Paradiso Guest House is located in the heart of Orvieto’s medieval district. Stepping out the main entrance places you amidst the charming streetscape of this area—the city's oldest and most authentic quarter. Just a short walk away lies the Pozzo della Cava, an underground complex of Etruscan origin featuring numerous cavities and chambers; since 2023, the well has been part of the prestigious UNESCO Global Network of Water Museums. The Church of San Giovenale (Orvieto’s oldest church) and the cloister of Palazzo Simoncelli are also easily reached on foot.

Piazza della Repubblica and Piazza del Popolo
After 200 meters, you reach Piazza della Repubblica, home to the elegant Town Hall and the adjacent Church of Sant'Andrea. Continuing along the central Corso Cavour, you arrive at Piazza del Popolo. This square is distinguished by the majestic Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo and, opposite it, the Torre del Moro (which is open to visitors).

Piazza del Duomo
The city's third major square, located 500 meters from the apartment, is Piazza del Duomo; here stands the Orvieto Cathedral, a magnificent example of Gothic-Romanesque architecture and widely considered one of Italy's most beautiful cathedrals. Visitors should explore the interior, the two chapels—particularly the Chapel of San Brizio, featuring frescoes by Luca Signorelli—and the statues of the saints and apostles. Piazza del Duomo is also home to Orvieto's main museums and the booking office for "Orvieto Underground," an unmissable tour of the city's subterranean passages.

Piazza Cahen
This square is the furthest away but easily accessible by walking along Corso Cavour (15 minutes) or by taking the city buses that run there from Piazza Duomo. Piazza Cahen is home to the municipal gardens of the Albornoz Fortress and, above all, the famous St. Patrick's Well (Pozzo di San Patrizio), a unique structure dating back to 1527. Near the entrance to the well, you will also find the funicular station, which provides a quick link between Orvieto's city center and the train station square (Orvieto Scalo).
